Teachers that are just beginning to teach believe that they will be a better teacher than the other teachers. The teachers believe that as they get more experience, they will become more confident and that they will learn most of what they need to know to be an effective teacher. Beginning teachers believe that the teachers that are affective are the ones who can clearly explain the subject to students.
ReplyDeleteA traditional licensure is what all of us are doing right now at PNC. You go to school, take the classes and graduate with a bachelor's degree in education. The alternate licensure is a back route that some states are promoting. A person must have a bachelor's degree in the subject they are going to teach and then they have to pass the licensure test along with attending an intensive teacher training.
This beginning teacher faces a few different rewards and challenges. One of her challenges was feeling like she wasn’t making a difference to the students. She felt that the students were not listening or caring about what she was trying to teach them. Another challenge was that in the fall months she had felt very overwhelmed and tired due to the fact that she had just begun teaching and was still getting used to it. One of her rewards was that by the end of the year she was able to see that her students did in fact learn from her and that she did make a difference. Another reward for her was that she was able to make a connection with one of her students that she had been having a difficult time with.
During my first year of teaching I believe I will face a few challenges. I believe one of those challenges will be me being nervous when I first start out. I’m going to school to teach high school chemistry and I sometimes worry that the students will not care about what I am saying at all. I also sometimes worry that the students will expect me to know everything about chemistry. It seems like that’s not a lot to ask but chemistry is such a huge subject I worry that I will not be able to learn enough to successfully teach them.
A lot of teacher go into this profession thing they are going to be the best teacher out there. They feel they have gone to school and learned all of the material and now it should be a breeze. When in reality they get into the classroom and they feel unprepared and overwhelmed. I feel what makes teacher go from average to an extremely effective teacher is how well they explain something. Very effective teachers explain subjects and direction very clearly and that’s what makes them so effective.
ReplyDeleteA traditional license is a regular license you get after completing your bachelors degree in education. This is the most common license and can be accomplished in all fifty states. An alternative license is when you receive a bachelor’s degree in a subject area such as math or English. Then you have to pass a licensure test, take a teacher training course and take a supervised teacher training internship.
Anne Marie talked about the rewards and challenges she faced in her classroom. Probably the biggest challenge she faced in her classroom the first year was being tired and not feeling as if you are making a difference or any progress in the classroom. She also said classroom management was another challenge she faced. An example of this was coming up with effective classroom rules. Anne Marie said that some of the rewards of this experience were all the work you put into your classroom really does make a difference in the end. She also said another reward is connecting with the children. I feel the biggest challenge I will face in my future classroom will be organization and preparation on top of teaching. This isn’t an eight to three job. There is a lot of preparing and organizing that goes on after everyone goes home. I feel that will be challenging for me.
Beginning teachers have many beliefs about what makes an effective teacher. Many believe that when they start teaching, they will be the best teacher out there. They have unrealistic optimism going into their first year. Beginning teachers believe that as they teach longer, they will become more confident in their teaching ability, but sometimes the opposite really happens. They also believe that the most effective teachers are able to clearly explain the content to their students, while they do not realize it is not only that easy. Beginning teachers think it will be easy and they will learn more just from being in the setting, without preparing themselves enough before they enter.
ReplyDeleteTraditional licensure is when you go to college and pass all the necessary classes to earn your bachelor's degree in education. The alternative licensure is earned after you already have your bachelor's degree in the subject to be taught. Then you have to pass a licensure test and complete a teacher training experience and internship.
One challenge that this first year teacher faced was all the overwhelming work at all times. She said she felt tired and she never got a break. She also felt that it was difficult to get her students to listen to her rules and listen to what she was saying. She was rewarded when she realized that all the work she put into teaching her students paid off. She felt she finally connected with one of her students she was having a hard time with and she felt rewarded by that as well.
I think one of the hardest challenges I will have in my first years of teaching is confidence. I feel like I will always be unsure of what I am doing and whether it is right or not. I will need to make sure I am confident in what I do in the classroom so the students do not see that I am unsure. I also feel I will have a hard time being prepared. Although I will have studied a lot in college, I do not think it can prepare me enough for my first year on my own. I will need to make sure to be organized and prepared for everyday at school.
There are five common beliefs of beginning teachers that the text highlights. First of all is the belief that when starting out, new teachers are more effective in the classroom than ones already teaching. Second of all, many think that the more ecperience a teacher has the more confident they become. Also, many new teachers think that an effective teacher is one who explains the content well. The fourth belief is that the most important things about teaching are learned through experience. Lastly, many teachers believe that as long as they understand the content they are teaching then they will be able to figure out a way to make students understand it.
ReplyDeleteTraditional licensure entails getting a bachelor's degree in education in addition to passing competency tests required by the state. Alternative licensure entails getting a bachelor's degree in the subject area in which you expect to teach in addition to an intense teacher train program and a teaching internship.
The challenges this teacher faced include being worn out and tired as well as being frusterated when students don't seem to care about what she is trying to teach them. She also mentioned classroom management being a challenge. The rewards she mentioned included seeing that her hard work paid off when reading levels increased, as well as connecting with a difficult student. The challenges I expect the face the most are finding effective classroom management teachniques as well as balancing all the responsibilities at home and work.
Many beginning teachers feel that when they finally are able to go out and become licensed teachers that they will be the best ones out there. They are just graduating from college and will have a bachelor or for some a masters degree. They are full of knowledge and most feel that is all that they need to effectively teach a class. Yes, knowing and understanding what you are teaching is very important, but what many teachers tend to neglect is how to run a class, not just teach it and because of this, that is why there is a large drop-out rate after a few years for beginning teachers. Though, in order to be an excellent and effective teacher, beginning teachers feel that they must explain everything clearly and smoothly.
ReplyDeleteA traditional license would be what we are all doing now. Going school in order to become a teacher by taking all of the necessary courses and passing through the program. Many states require the upcoming teacher to pass a series of tests in order to receive their license, in many states it is the Praxis test. This alternative license is sort of the back-door way into becoming a teacher. They must already have a bachelor degree in the subject they wish to teach and through passing the licensure test and attending extensive teacher training programs, they can become a teacher.
Well some of the challenges that Ann Marie faced was having feelings of not getting through and making progress with the kids. She was tired all the time and at some points didn't know how to run her classroom. She would use other teachers' rules to sort of guide her classroom. She did feel great about making a difference with the kids and knowing that all the hard work that she was putting in did eventually make a difference. She was looking for a challenge and wanted to make a difference compared to other job where she said she was just making rich people get richer. Oh I think that some of the challenges I will face will be making effective classroom rules and teaching in a style that won't bore the children. Being organized would be a challenge that I would face I know for sure, so I would have to work on that. Being prepared about teaching and knowing that you are the boss and care taker of the kids is something that is impossible to learn through book work and studying. You can only get prepared for that by actually doing it.
When teachers first start out they have five main beliefs that will make them an effective teacher. One of their beliefs is that they will be a better teacher than the teachers who are already in the field. They believe that they are up-to-date and full of the new knowledge the students need. Another belief is that they will become more confident in their abilities to help kids. They believe that as they teach, things will go good and they will get more confident in their ways. They believe that an effective teacher is a teacher who can explain the content clearly to their students and that they will learn the most important teaching ideas and concepts once they get into the classroom. Finally, the believe that an effective teacher will figure out how to get the content they are teaching to all their students as long as they know the materials. These ideas really make a beginning teacher question their decision to be a teacher once they actually get into the classroom because these ideas are not very realisitic.
ReplyDeleteToday there are two different types of licenses. There is the traditional license which requires a person to go to school and complete a bachelors degree such as what we are completing now. After completing a series of courses, it is necessary to pass whatever state testing is required to get your license. The second type of license is the alternative license which allows people who have a bachelors degree in a content area to teach that area after passing a licensure test and completing some teacher training courses and completing an internship like period.
There are many reward and challenges that come from teaching. Some challenges the teacher from the video faced included figuring out how to handle classroom management and misbehavior as well as overcoming the feeling of being overwhelmed. At times during the beginning of the year, she felt students weren't really listening to what she was trying to teach or that she was not reaching her full potential for the students. Some of her rewards included seeing her students succeed and learning. She got to see that all her college coursework was paying off each day the students learned something new. Some challenges I believe I will face in my first year include things such as classroom management, and what I will do with students who just have a really hard life and really don't want to learn at the time. I believe that just learning how to handle the day to day problems that arise in the classroom and affect the flow of they day I have planned.
Well, confiedence does make a person, a teacher in this case, more effective, but I think the belief of gaining more experience in the class room is more realistic. Knowing your content is a major attribute on a teachers effectiveness as well. Being able to connect with your students is probably, what I believe, the biggest and most important task to accomplish. All five beliefs together add up to make a great teacher.
ReplyDeleteTraditional licensure is the standard way of becoming a teacher. You study math, english, science, history and all your basics to become well rounded, (the more you learn the more you and everyone can benefit.)and you also take education classes, like this one, to teach you how to be a teacher. You get your degree, pass your tests, and get your teaching license.
Alternative licensure is when you major in a specific feild such as English and you get your degree in English then you do a crash cource in teaching training and do an internship then wow you are a teacher.
The movie displayed a teacher who felt overwhelmed at first. She struggled with managing a well oiled classroom. She also felt that she wasn't connecting with them and couldn't relay her message. At the end of the year she realized that they did learn and she made an impact on students that she thought she wouldn't. I feel that my biggest challange as a first year teacher will be finding my niche. I know that I will feel super energized and excited coming in and probably will have to realize that realisticlly I can't solve every problem and fix every student. On that note, my second year will probably be better because I will be more balanced. Being a mother of three, soon to be four, is training me to handle chaos as well as day to day changes. My biggest challenge would probably be just finding the best well balanced teacher in me.
Well most beginning teachers believe that they are the best teacher out there. That they are actually better then the "older" teachers. They also feel that the more experience one has, the more confident they become as a teacher. They tend to believe that a good teacher is one who explains the course content very well and effectively. They feel that the most important things about teaching is learned through their experiences. The last thing beginning teachers believe is that as long as they know the material well, that they will be able to help their students figure it out as well.
ReplyDeleteThe traditional licensure is the way most people obtain their teaching degree. You study all the subjects and even take teaching classes to recieve your degree. You will receive your degree, pass your licensure test, and then get your license. The alternative licensure is when you major in a specific field such as Science and then you get your degree in Science. After all that your decide to teach science so you take teaching training classes and pass your licensure test and then your a teacher.
One of her rewards was that by the end of the year she was able to see that her students did learn from her and that she had made a difference. Another reward was the connection she made with the student that she had been having problems with through out the year. One of her challenges was feeling like she wasn’t making a difference to the students. She felt that the students were not listening or caring. Another challenge was that in the fall months she had felt very overwhelmed and tired because she has really just started teaching. It was still getting to her. I think I will face many challenges as a teacher. I will see kids hit others and call each other names. I will have the student who act up and act like they do not care what I am talking about. But I feel like that just comes with what we are doing. We have to figure out what we will do in those situations on our own. Yes, we all might know in our minds what we must do to help that student, but how will we say it? I think my biggest challenge as a teacher will be those times where I might have to dicipline a student because I like to avoid confrontation.
Begining teachers have lots of common beliefs some of which I had myself until reading this chapter. Some begining teachers believe that they will be better than other teachers, and that they will be more confident as they go. Most teachers get better at teaching while certain subjects as they go however they will not get more confident in thier methods in the first couple of years. The book states and one in four teachers change thier profession durring the first couple of years and that four in ten leave with in the first five years. Some early teachers beilieve that just lecturing is the best way to teach which is actually the opposite. Letting the children participate in the activities of the classroom such as giving them math or english problems on the board to try and correcting thier mistakes there in person instead of on thier homework is more effective. Also begining teachers believe that they will learn more in thier class rooms and as long as they know the matterial they will be able to teach it, but actually a person is suppose to learn that before they get into thier own class room by eathier leaning it in one of their core classes or durring thier student teacher program.
ReplyDeleteThe traditional licensure is the one that a person receaves durring the bacholor degree program which is what most of the younger teachers recieve. An alternative licensure is one that a teacher recieves after already having thier bacholor degree and going back to school to get an education degree. With the traditional a person must take the Praxis or another type of test to prove thier capabilities. To whereas with the alternative the person must hold a bachalors in the content area that they are trying to teach such as math or english.
This teacher said that her rewards where knowing that she made a difference and seeing the children meet thier goals. She struggled with being tired and feeling overwhelmed. Not knowing at first that she was getting through to a child with learning difficulties. Another one of her rewards was when she finally did get through and come to a common ground with the child with the learning difficulties
There are five common beliefs held by preservice teachers as highlighted by the text. First, there is an optimistic and idealistic perspective held by preservice teachers that feel they "will be a better teacher than than most of the teachers now in the field." However the optimism wanes and they question their career choice as the realities of the classroom become a shock to first year teachers. Second, they expect to become more confident in their abilities as a teacher as they gain experience when in actuality often the oppisite occurs. The third commonly held belief is that the most effective teachers are ones who are best able to clearly explain the content they teach, where as research suggest that young or unmotivated students are quite ineffected by simply lecturing. Another fouth common belief is one that is rather inaccurate. This is the one that the most important aspects of teaching are those learned once you get into the classroom. Though as with anything, and research confirms, the more prepared you are for something the better you will be able to adapt and evolve into the most effecient at what you are doing. The fifth belief and common misconception is that a teacher will be able to figure out a way of getting across to students as long as they understand the content they are teaching. This belief also coincides with the one that all of the important aspects of teaching will be learned in the classroom. While content knowledge is crucial, so is the ability to teach that can only be learned through the experiences of experts who we ourselves as students learn from.
ReplyDeleteAs far as a comprison between traditional and alternative licensure, there are more differences than there are similarities. The only they they have in common is the requirment of content knowledge. Traditional is the process of attending a university to recieve a degree in education and passing all of the required tests to receieve certifiaction of competency and content knowledge in the area you will be teaching. The alternative route is receiving a degree in a particular field specifically, passing a licensure test, participating in a teachers training program, and a teaching internship. More alternative licensed teachers make the decision to change careers than traditional teachers. A factor possibly contributed to by the higer availability of jobs for people with a degree in a field more broad than teaching itself as well as other factors.
Anne Marie expressed the challenges she faced in her first year of teaching. Among these challenges were the feelings of not having enough time to suffeciantly plan her course and feeling tired all of the time as a result of always trying to keep up. In the midst of her attempts to have a positive affect on her students she found it difficult to notice any. In the end though she started to realize a consistant development in her students learing process as well as her growing ability to adapt to the daily challenges of the classroom. With each day she learned new approaches to better enable herself to have a positive effect in her students life and education.
This is the reward i myself look forward to the most, knowing that I am makiong a difference and the realization that I actually am able to make the transition from student to a succesful teacher. Though my concerns are many, the one that stands out the most is my confidence in subject matter. I intend to become a high school math teacher. Math is a subject with so much depth and is accompanied by an absolute like or distain from students. If I am not confident about my knowledge of the subject how can I expect to pass on confidence. Once I am able to assure myself of this uncertainty I am confident that because of my life experiences I will be able to reflect and adapt to any situation that arises and I look forward to the point in my life where I know I have accomplished these abilities.
We see that once a teacher begins their career, they have a sense of being the best teacher. They feel as if they know exactly what is going to happen and that they are so good that they can handle anything. However we see that teachers are surprised at what really happens in teaching and they are brought back down to earth. I think that you should be confident and have a swagger about yourself in order to be successful in teaching or whatever career choice you make.
ReplyDeleteAs we now see, people can get an alternative teachers license by having a college degree, and going back to become a teacher. My mother actually just did this and she now teaches at the elementary school that I attended. My mom graduated from Valparaiso University but didn't go for education. Since my dad owns his own business, my mom would do the paperwork and financial aspects to keep busy. However she has always had the desire to teach so she went back to get a teaching license. She did a year and a half long program and received her license. I however am doing the traditional way of going to school with education as my major.
Some challenges that we saw in the DVD, was that the teacher felt as if she wasn't connecting with the students. She felt as if what she was teaching was not sticking with her kids. We also saw that she was drained due to a lack of time which caused her to constantly play catch up. However in the end, we saw that she was able to teach her students and saw a difference with the children that struggled. I think that some challenges I will face are satisfaction and difference making. I feel that I will let myself and my students down if I can't see a difference not only with their education but also with them as people. I want my students to come back after high school and say that I made a difference or that I helped lead them to success.
There are five beliefs for beginning teachers. Teachers belief that they will be the best teacher that is in the field. Second, they think that as they have more experience with teaching they will become more confident with helping students learn. Third, they think that the best effective teacher is one who explains the material well to the students. First year teachers also belief that they will learn the most important things about teaching when they actually get into the classroom. Lastly, teachers believe that if they know and understand the content they are teaching they will be able to teach it to the students.
ReplyDeleteTraditional license is what all of us elementary education majors are trying to do right now. When you have a traditional license you have a bachelor’s degree in education and you also had to pass tests that are required by the state in order to have a traditional license. An alternative license is when you have to get a bachelors degree in the subject area that you are expecting to teach. An alternative license also entails going through teacher training programs and a teaching internship.
I saw some challenges that the teacher had while watching the DVD. I saw that this first year teacher felt tired and overwhelmed all time. She felt like she wasn’t ever getting a break. She also mentioned that she felt like the students weren’t listening to her and that she thought she was having a hard time getting her point across to her students. She thought she wasn’t connecting with the students. She was rewarded when she found out at the end of the year that all of her hard work paid off and that the students did learn from her. She also found it rewarding when she connected with one of her students that she was having a difficult time with. I think the most challenging thing that I will face when I have my first year teaching is confidence. I want to know what I am doing in the classroom; I also want the students to understand the things I am teaching them. I am afraid that some students won’t want to learn and they won’t be excited about learning. I want to find a way to make them excited about learning new things in class.
First year teachers have many misconceptions of their first year. When, they land their first job, they think will be the best teacher as they have the latest and greatest ideas. New teachers believe that as they teach they’ll become more confident only the opposite occurs. Teachers feel that if they grasp the content, then they’ll be able to clearly communicate it to their students. It’s not as easy as it sounds.
ReplyDeleteThere are two types of licensure. The most common form is traditional licensure, which is where you go to college and receive a bachelor’s degree in education. Classes are focused in education. The other form of licensure is alternative licensure. This type of is when you have a degree in a particular area and wish to teach that particular field. You ultimately have to pass a licensure test and experience training in order to obtain the license.
The first year teacher faced many challenges. As with many first year teachers, she was very overwhelmed and felt she didn’t have the time to accomplish things. Another challenge she faced was classroom management. She felt, the students hardly listened to her and followed the rules. However, she noticed by the end of the school year that the students did in fact learn and that she did have an impact on her students.
The main challenges I think I will face is confidence and classroom management. I believe both of these go hand in hand. Having a great source of confidence, will allow your rules and policies to be implemented with very little modifying. If don’t have the confidence that will directly reflect on my students behavior.
First year teachers often feel that they will be better than experienced teachers, and that they will gain confidence with their experiences helping children. They feel that the best thing is to be able to explain the content of their lessons, and that most of their learning will happen once they are in the classroom. Beginning teachers also often feel that they will be able to explain to the students the content of their lesson by just understanding the material.
ReplyDeleteTraditional licensure programs require the prospective teacher to earn a bachelor's degree in education, learning subjects such as history, math, and English, including other courses to develop their professional knowledge. Would-be-teachers are also asked in many cases to take the Praxis exams to measure their basic knowledge in reading, writing, and math.
Alternative Licensure requires prospective teachers to have a bachelor's degree in the area of study that they wish to teach, pass a licensure test, do an intensive training experience, and complete an internship.
In the reading, they discussed how the alternative licensure is a debated topic. Many of the teachers are not as prepared for the classroom as teachers who are traditionally licensed. The programs are varied, and the better ones are very expensive and time consuming.
In the video, the teacher discussed her challenges and rewards of her first year. Her rewards were the connections she made with the students, and the feeling of accomplishment she felt with the knowledge they had gained because of her teaching. Her main challenges were being tired, organized, and learning to "leave her personal life at home".
A challenge I will most likely face as a first year teacher would be finding my confidence with the students, parents, and the material itself. I am sure that finding a productive routine will also be a challenge. There are only so many hours in a day, so I am sure that the happy medium will take some time to find.
In the first year of teaching, a teacher assumes that they will be a fantastic teacher. They think that coming right out of school that they are going to be the best and most effective. First year teachers also believe that as long as they understand the content of the material, it can easily be explained. They also believe that the more experience they gain, the more confident they will become. Another belief is teachers are most effective if they can clearly explain the content that they are teaching. Lastly, first year teachers believe that most of what they will learn will be in the classroom.
ReplyDeleteA traditional license is a regular license you get after completing your bachelors degree in education. This license is the most common for a teacher to have. You have to pass certain tests in order to receive this license. An alternative license is when you receive a bachelor’s degree in a certain field. You then have to pass a licensure test and take a training course with an internship.
The clip was about a teacher that was worn-out and frustrated during her first year of teaching. She wanted to make a difference with her students but couldn't seem to connect with them. It ended up that she did make an impact on her students, especially some she thought she would never. I think one major challenge I am going to have being a first year teacher is classroom management. I mean you think in your mind right now that this is going to be fun and easy and your going to make a change. In all reality your managing children. It will probably be one of the most difficult challenges that I am going to have to overcome.
In the beginning teachers have many thoughts about teaching. One is that when they begin teaching, they will be better than most of the teachers already in the field. Secondly, they think as they gain experience in teaching that they can expect to become more confident in helping children learn. Third is that the most effective teachers are the ones the clearly explain the content they teach to students.
ReplyDeleteA traditional license is what you would go to college for. You get excepted into your major, take the classes, and graduate with a degree in Elementary Education. An Alternative license is earned by having a degree in something already and then taking an intensive teachers course to begin teacher.
The first year teacher seemed to struggle a lot in the DVD. She felt extremely unorganized and overwhelmed during the year. She felt that the students were not even learning anything, but by the end of the year I think she realized she was judging herself too hard and that they were learning. I think I will have many of the same challenges my first year. Even if I am organized, I will feel unorganized and overwhelmed until I get use to things. I will be nervous that the kids aren't learning anything.
in the first years of teaching you going to be very nervous and not sure of what your going to do like for how to come up with a lesson plan. This something that will imndate alot people, like me.
ReplyDeletemy belief will be the child is first, knowing you suppose to but some teacher dont need to be there. thats what make me better and separeted from other teachers. You got to get on the kids that need that. so they will understand. not say you have to be a friend but not a parent either.
Some teacher need more positive aduttide then some of the teacher I seen. Im just saying that the kids need a hero or role model.
