Be the Change

Thanks for a great class today. I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did. I believe we will all walk away from this experience with an understanding that it is our responsibility to BE THE CHANGE WE WANT TO SEE IN THE WORLD!

Listen to the song Man in the Mirror, by Michael Jackson how does his song relate to what you will need to do to become an Effective Educator Committed to Professional Growth and School Reform?

  1. This song has always been inspirational to me. I love "Man in the Mirror" and it is a shame that everyone who listens to it doesn't want to make the "world a better place". To become an effective educator it is important for you to fix your wrongs and make yourself a better person so you can set an example for others. You need to have the strength and knowledge to be able to successfully make a positve difference. In this song the refrain simply is translated, look at yourself, build your confidence, change your faults and help the less fortunate.

  2. This song definately touches a persons heart it is true how to make change in the world you must first look in the mirror and change yourself and start from that point. In order be an effective educator set a good example for the younger generations. Give them some one to look up to, someone to follow down a successful life path and change the world one person at a time starting with yourself.

  3. The song Man in the Mirror helps us realize that trying to change something has to start with yourself. We can't just expect for others to do everything if we aren't going to try. To become an Effective Educator Committed to Professional Growth and School Reform, we have to first look at ourselves and make sure we are setting a good example. If we start out being the good example, others are likely to follow in our footsteps and make the world a better place.

  4. Not my favorite Michael Jackson song, but a descent one nonetheless. No matter what kind of music you listen to, I think everyone has a soft spot for Michael, especially Thriller. Now that I am done with my little tangent, I agree with what everyone above me has said about becoming an effective educator. You do need to set a good example to the students' because when they are in your class, you may be the only one that they can look up to and ask for guidance. By having a postive attitude about what you are doing and teaching you can make the students' lives more positive.

  5. I believe this is a very influential song to encourage people to change. A person really has to be able to look at themselves before change can happen. No changes can be made unless a person wants to make changes, and a person really has to have the determination and will in themselves to make the changes happen. Teachers are very influential in students' lives. Sometimes, some students have such poor family lives that a teacher is a students only true role model. A teacher plays such as important role in each students' life that it is imparitive to make sure you make the changes in yourself to be a positive influence in a child's life. Students are the future of the world, so by setting a good example for kids we really start to change the world. A person has to really be able to look themselves in the mirror to make sure they are the best person they can be.

  6. I had never heard this song before, however after listening to it I found it to be pretty powerful. As role models and educators, we have a chance to change childrens lives for the better. In the video we saw children that were weak and sad. We all will have some students that come from a bad background and we will have the chance to guide that child into the right direction. However we must firts look at ourselves and realize that we have a chance to change someone's life for the better and do everything we can to make sure it is a successful one.

  7. This was my first time listening to "Man in the Mirrow" and it actually has a great message within the song. To become an Effective Educator you need to look at yourself and see what you need to change about yourself. We first need to change something about ourselves before we try and change anything else. We can not expect others to change what is going on in the world, we have to be the change. We have to make the change happen, if we dont make changes happen, who will?

  8. This was also my first time listening to “Man in the Mirror” by Michael Jackson. This song is incredibly powerful in terms of its message. I think in order to be an effective teacher you need to look at why exactly you want to be an educator. Often, the answer is you love kids. I know many don’t like that answer because there are many people who love kids who wouldn’t necessarily make a great educator. However, if you look at yourself and find yourself as a lifelong learner you may find the guidance that may influence the change you want to bring to education.

  9. In order to be commited to something, we must really believe in it. The song Man in the Mirror is a prime example of what it means to believe in something, making a change. When it comes to being a teacher we must have a passion for making a change in others, and ourselves, and believe in ourself that we can do so. Michael Jackson demonstrates in this song that we must want to make the change and then we must pursue that change with everything we have. Being an effective educator is just like this song, we must want to make the change and then purue it 100%.

  10. I absolutely love this song. In order to become an effective educator you have to first set everything aside and make sure that you have the right mind set. You are setting an example for those that you are teaching. If you have that passion and drive to help others than you can help contribute to making a change. The man in the mirror is basically a translation to you taking a look at yourself; pulling out your passion, and making a difference.

  11. Both inside and outside of the realm of education there are a vast number of issues begging for someone to care. Whether it be AIDS orphans in Africa, homeless families in our own country, or one child in our classroom who feels unimportant or stupid, we as educators have the power not only to inform people of the issues but to be a part of the solution. However, as Michael Jackson so poignantly puts it, we can do nothing for others if we don't first take care of our own issues and beging to like and understand the person we see in the mirror. In other words, if we want to see more kindness, awareness, and tolerance in our own homes, schools, and world then we first need to become kinder, more informed, and more tolerant people.

  12. This song really made me think about how I am going about my teaching career. I sat there and thought about my teaching wardrobe. I thought about my personality in and out of the classroom. What will I take in there with me and what should I leave at the door? There are so many things that I need to really think about and sort out in my life so I can make the best decisions for my future students. When I walk in those doors I need to make sure any of my problems stay out the door because those little lives that are in my hands are fragile and I only want the best for them. I don't know what it is that I need to change for sure, but I know that I have honestly started thinking about the professional attitude I will need to obtain.

  13. Before listening to this song tonight I had never really thought about this question or listened to the words more deeply. What will I do to become an effective educator? I feel the most important thing to do is be the person you want to see your students become. Be a role model for all these young lives that will stare up at you 180 day a year. I truly believe that the best place to start with change is to start with you.

  14. The Man in the Mirror is a very inspirational song, which I never really listened that closely to until now. It's lyrics epitomize what is needed to be a successful educator and a successful person in general. In order to inspire change and action in others, you must first make those changes in yourself. It makes me think of the old saying about people in glass houses not throwing stones. If you aren't practicing what you preach, then how are you supposed to motivate others to try to be better? As an educator, you have the opportunity to help influence young lives in a positive manner. They are looking up to you, wanting you to show them the way, looking for hope, and expecting answers. If you are not trying to be someone that can inspire them and create that hope in their lives, then you are not being that change this world needs.

  15. This song is a great song to open people's eyes. While watching and listening I began to think of ways that I could help. But, I feel like my efforts would be lost among the millions of others trying to help. After all, I am just one person. So then I began to think of how I could help in a bigger way. It would be great to get donations of things from students at school. Maybe as a class this is something we could work on. It'd be a great way to make a difference and a change. As future educators is important that we help inspire our students to make changes. We must show students that one of life's greatest gifts is to help and share with others who are less fortunate. This lesson is important to learn at young age, as educators we can teach this lesson early on and watch it's effects.

  16. I want to look back and know that what I am portraying to my students is getting through to them. That I am making a difference for them. I want to inspire them to do new things. That maybe they will leave my class with a whole lot more to look forward to or to even learn. That maybe in some big way they can make a difference too.

  17. I have always said that the best thing you can give another person to make them happy is your own happiness. This song reflects the idea of starting with yourself if you want to make a change. There is no other way to change, otherwise you are thinking and not doing. All that has changed is your mind, and that is not a real change.
One line I truly like in the song is "close your heart, close your mind." This is so true. The practice of reflection is so important, because you will learn to see who you truly feel is there instead of the ego based reflection of the rest of the world's expectations of you. Only then will you realize your own power of making a difference starting with the changes you would truly like to see in yourself.
