Welcome

Welcome to EDST 20000 The History and Philosophy of Education. This course is a hybrid course which means we will meet face-to-face on campus 1/4 of the time and we will meet online 3/4 of the time. The course syllabus will provide you with the dates we will be meeting in class and online. August 24th is when our first class will meet. We will meet on campus in the technology building room 214 at 1:00 p.m. Please demonstrate professionalism and arrive a little early (no more than 15 minutes) or by 1:00 p.m. I will be in the room at 12:45 p.m. Bring a copy of the syllabus and curriculum map to class with you. You can find this on the blog under course tools.

This blog will be used as a learning tool to respond to course content and material, to take polls and collect data, and to provide you with information concerning the course. The purpose of the blog is to conduct class online and to extend the learning and discussions that occur in the classroom.

As part of your course assignments you will be required to thoughfully respond to the posts throughout the semester. Since this is a place where information is published please use correct grammar and spelling.

To get you started here is the first blog post for you to respond to: Introduce yourself and share the HISTORY of your name. How did you get your name? Are you named after someone? Is there any special meaning to your name. This can include first, middle or last name...or any combination. How do you feel about your name? Do you have any nicknames, etc.?

  1. My name is Debra Jean Hollingsworth Pratt and I am the professor for the Monday EDST 20000 class. My dad chose my name for me and I am named after my Aunt Jean. My mother wanted to name me Paula after my dad whose name was Paul. My family always called me Debbie and I never liked that name because there were many other girls with the same name. I always wished I had a more unique name. Today most people call me Deb but I wish I would have had the nickname DJ.

  2. Hi my name is Emily Ann Filbert. My parents named me after my dads grandmother. My last name Filbert is also a nut, you usually see it in the stores around Thanksgiving. Also, my great grandfather started Filbert's rootbeer in Chicago in 1926 and has now been passed down to my cousin Ron Filbert. I have a few nicknames. My friends sometimes call me Em for short and my mom calls me Emma and also, unfortunately, Emmalou.

  3. My name is Kelleen Elizabeth Miller. My parents decided they wanted to name me something original but couldn't decide on a name at first. My dad had always liked the name Kelly but they thought it was too generic and my mother heard the name Kaleena. My dad didn't like the "a" on the end so they removed it and added the beginning of Kelly. They actually found my name spelled as it is in a baby name book and agreed on that name. I love my name because it is unique but people have a very hard time pronouncing it. It is actually said exactly as it is spelled but I have heard just about every name close to it. People in my family call me Kelly as a nickname but for some reason I find it strange when anyone else calls me that. Most of my friends or people that can't pronounce my name just call me Kell for short.

  4. My name is Courtney Lynn Gant. While both of my siblings are named after relatives, my parents simply picked my name out of a baby name book (which isn't ever a super fun story to tell at parties). I suppose my name could be a lot worse, but I have always wanted a more unique name, or at least one with an interesting meaning. As far as nicknames go, everyone just calls me Court.

  5. My name is Jacquelyn Sue Snyder. I was named Jacquelyn by my father. My middle name is a shorter version of my mother's middle name Susan. I think that everyone wishes their name was something else at one point or another, and I was no different. However, I am happy with my name choice. I cannot imagine being named anything else. Usually people call me Jackie, well except for my brother who still refers to me as Baby Bird.

  6. My name is Evan William Walter. My parents wanted to give me a name that was kind of unique and out of the ordinary, and they came up with Evan. My grandpa's name was Bill (William) which is where my middle name comes from. The only nicknames I have are, Ev for short and some of my friends from high school call me E-Walt.

  7. My name is Michael Spencer Prentiss. I was named Michael after one of my father's cousins and Spencer, my middle name is actually my mother's maiden name. My mother actually wishes she had changed my name, but I like it the way it is. I really don't have any nicknames other than my friends calling me Mike.

  8. My name is Ashley Nicole Powers. My first and middle name came from my mom's favorite soap opera that she watches, The Young and the Restless. I am named after two of the main characters, Ashley Abbott and Nicole Newman from the show. I like my name, but at times it gets annoying because Ashley is such a popular name. Sometimes there are two or three Ashley's in a classroom which makes it difficult to know who a person is referring to. The only other name people usually refer to me as is Ash.

  9. Hi my name is Maddie Louise Dayton. My mom named me Maddie after a woman named Maddie on a show called Moonlighting. She decided to pick Maddie and not Madeline or Madison because she really just wanted to call me Maddie. My middle name Louise is after my grandma's middle name. I've always like my name, I just wish it was short for something. My family and some of my friends call me Maddie Lou.

  10. My name is Karissa Rae Inglis. My mom is a hair stylest and used to have a mother come in with her little girl. This little girls full name was Karissa Rae. My mom fell in love with the name and decided that her first daughter would take that name too. So here I am, but luckly my name is broken up into first and middle. I don't think I would like that long of a name. I don't really have any nicknames. I mean I get Kriss here and there, but it never really sticks. I guess the softball girls call me KI, but thats just because they think saying Karissa is too long.

  11. My name is Jessica Rose Johnston. I am the baby of the family. My mother named me Jessica Rose after my grandmother. I like my name a lot. I dont really have any nicknames, unless someone just shortens my name. I looked up my name and it means wealthy and comes from the Hebrew origin.

  12. I am named after my mother's mother. My mom is also named after her mother's mother. This tradition has lasted four generations. My name means happy and prosperous, which fits me pretty well so far. I have been married for six years hence my last name of "Kmiecik". This name is a polish name which means peasant with land. My name is pretty unique so as a child I didn't care for it but I am learning to appreciate a name and use it to my advantage.

  13. Hi my name is Courtney Nicole Tibbot. I am actually the baby of the family. I don’t really have a “cool” story to tell about how I received my name. Before I was born my dad was actually watching an episode of Miss America and one of the contestant’s names was Courtney. He liked the name and my mom did as well, so that’s how I received my first name. I was actually without a middle name for a few days. My parents couldn’t decide what name would sound nice after Courtney. After thinking for awhile they came up with the name Nicole. I like my name; I just wish it had more meaning behind it. My parents, family and friends have always called me Court, and some of my friends also call me Co.

  14. My name is Jessica Lynne Reeder. I'm not really sure why my parents named me this, all I know is that my mom and sister who was five at the time were doing the dishes and my mom asked my sister what she thought of Jessica for my name and my sister really liked it and then my sister said to name me Jessica Lynne because her Cabbage Patch doll's name was Lynne, of course the day they brought me home from the hospital my sister wanted to change it to Hattie after her other Cabbage Patch Doll. I actually do like my name even though it is one of the most common names, I don't think I've ever had a class where there wasn't at least one other Jessica. But my family and friends just call me Jessie or Jess

  15. Hello my name is Joshua David Wiedder. I am unaware of why my parents' picked the first name that they did for me, but I do know that my middle name come's from my uncle's first name. This was my mom's brother who was a major influence in her life and she felt that it would be nice for my middle name to be his first name. I really don't have any nicknames besides Josh and spin-offs from my last name. I thouroughly enjoy my name.

  16. My name is Elizabeth Renee Sarver. My dad wanted to name me Ellieen after the "prettiest girl in his high school." My mom on the other hand wanted to name me Elizabeth after the "prettiest girl on the TV show Eight is Enough." Either way I was receiving a "pretty" name in there eyes! As we can see my mom won the battle and I was named Elizabeth. My middle name is also my mom's name. For nicknames I have the usual Liz which I respond to quite nicely. My bother and Dad call me Sis or Sissy. Only people I give permission to call me Lizzy, and never EVER Beth. Still to this day my dad wishes my name was Ellieen. This girl must have been smokin' hot!

  17. My name is Krista Marie Carter. It means Christ Bearer and it's origin is Scandanavian. While I believe in God, I've never followed any particular religion, so it's ironic that it means Christ Bearer. Marie is my mom's middle name as well as my aunt's middle name and my cousin's middle name. My dad picked the name Krista, I'm not sure why though. I do have one nickname, and I only allow my family to call me Kricker. I won't respond to Kris, Krissy, Kristal, Kristin, or Kristina, although a lot of people seem to think I do. My last name was my mother's maiden name, Wiseman, until I was 5 years old and my parents changed it to Carter. I like both names, but Wiseman could have changed my whole life.

  18. My name is sandra cheri Day. Sandra means helper and defender of man kind. My mom named me that after my aunt who goes by sandy and my middle name comes from a candy bar that she ait while she was pregnant. The candy bar actually had a french name and i have only saw it once and it is not pronounced the same way mine is my mom just though that is what it was. When i was growing up though and my close friends and family still call me cheri but now that i am in college my teachers and friends from school call me sandra and its starting to grow on me but when i was younger i absolutly despised that name and always thought that i would turn 18 and change it to something a little cooler and not so old fashion.

  19. Hi, my Name is Shane Michael Ransom. There is really no significance to my name or the reason why I was given it. I have been told that if I was a girl my parents where going to name me Shasta. So among many other reasons, I am happy to be a boy. Except for my sister calling me Shaners and a goofy friend calling me Ramsey, I have never had any nicknames actually stick. On interesting thing about my name though is that their is a movie titled Shane(an old country western), one titled Miachael(John Travolta), and one titled Ransom(Mel Gibson). There is probably not too many people who can say that.
